Our Projects
The Global & Local Center for Mental Health Disparities is engaged in clinical, research, and training and education initiatives in more than 15 countries through collaborative, interdisciplinary, and bidirectional partnerships with local experts and academic institutions.
Liberia
Through residency and fellowship training, we prepare psychiatrists in Liberia to provide patient care and support mental health services nationwide. In partnership with the Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons, we support capacity building and strengthen Liberia’s mental health system.
Peru
The Improving Access to Mental Health Care Globally CO-LLAB Research Group seeks to improve access to mental health care in under-resourced settings through the development of culturally informed, integrated mental health care systems and services and sustainable training of non-mental health professionals. The research group is built on strong bidirectional collaborations with local universities, government entities, and NGOs in Peru and seeks to improve capacity for research and clinical care delivery in the country.
Massachusetts, USA
Training the next generation of psychiatrists and clinical researchers requires opportunities that extend beyond traditional clinical education. In partnership with Boston Medical Center and Boston University, we support education and training in global, local, and cultural psychiatry for residents and fellows, including mentorship, research training, and work in local and international settings.
Senegal
We collaborate with Cheikh Anta DIOP University of Dakar (UCAD) to support psychiatric education and research through research training and scholarly visits. Faculty exchanges between Dakar and Boston are part of this collaboration.
Ethiopia
We conducted an epidemiological, mixed-methods study in rural Ethiopia to better understand gender differences in the prevalence of schizophrenia and potential sociocultural explanations for this difference.
India
Through institutional exchanges with partners in Chennai, India, we collaborated on research on serious mental illness to inform the development of sustainable, systems-level mental health services.
Kenya
In partnership with the Kenya Medical Research Institute, we studied the prevalence, patterns, and correlates of psychoactive substance use among female sex workers in Nairobi’s informal settlements.
